Understand the Paper's Real Nature
GS Paper 1 tests both static knowledge — History, Geography, Polity, Economy and Environment — and dynamic current affairs woven into those same subjects. Treating them as separate silos is a common mistake; instead, connect current events back to the static topics they relate to.
Build a Strong NCERT Foundation First
Before touching advanced reference books, complete Class 6 to 12 NCERTs for History, Geography, Polity and Economy. These books build the conceptual clarity needed to correctly interpret UPSC's often indirect and application-based questions.
Current Affairs: Read With a Purpose
Rather than reading the newspaper cover to cover, focus on government schemes, international relations, environment and science-technology developments, and always ask how a given news item could be converted into a prelims-style question.
Polity Deserves Special Attention
Indian Polity consistently yields a high number of scoring, relatively predictable questions compared to other sections. A thorough, repeated reading of the Constitution's key articles, schedules and amendments pays off disproportionately well.
Practice Elimination, Not Just Recall
Many UPSC prelims questions are designed so that two options can be eliminated through logic even without perfect recall of the fact. Practising this elimination technique on previous year papers is often more valuable than pure memorisation.
Mock Tests Are Non-Negotiable
Attempt full-length prelims mock tests regularly to build the stamina and guessing-strategy needed for a 2-hour, 100-question paper with negative marking. Review not just wrong answers but also questions you got right by chance.
Manage Negative Marking Wisely
With one-third negative marking per wrong answer, a disciplined approach — attempting a question only when you can eliminate at least two options — usually produces a better final score than attempting every single question.
