Understanding the Two-Tier Structure
SSC CGL is conducted in two tiers — Tier 1 is a screening-level test covering General Intelligence, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and English, while Tier 2 is more in-depth with additional sections depending on the post applied for.
Tier 1 Weightage Breakdown
Each of the four sections in Tier 1 typically carries 25 questions worth 50 marks, with 0.5 mark negative marking per wrong answer. Quantitative Aptitude and General Intelligence usually require the most practice time since they are less about recall and more about speed and accuracy.
General Awareness: The High ROI Section
Static GK, current affairs, and basic science questions in this section can be prepared relatively quickly compared to Maths and Reasoning. A daily 30-minute current affairs habit over 3-4 months builds a strong base here.
Quantitative Aptitude Strategy
Focus on building speed in Arithmetic (Percentage, Profit-Loss, Time-Work) first since these appear most frequently, then move to Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry. Timed sectional tests are far more useful than untimed chapter practice at this stage.
English Language Section
Grammar rules, one-word substitutions, idioms and reading comprehension form the bulk of this section. Daily reading of English newspapers alongside grammar practice improves both vocabulary and comprehension speed simultaneously.
A Suggested 4-Month Timeline
Spend the first two months building concepts across all four subjects, the third month exclusively on previous year papers and sectional mocks, and the final month on full-length mocks with strict time management and error analysis.
Stay Updated on Notification Dates
SSC CGL notifications, application deadlines and admit card releases change every cycle, so keeping track of announcements as they happen is essential to not lose preparation time.
