Defence Exams (NDA/CDS) 2026: Physical Standards and Written Test Strategy

Two Exams, Overlapping Preparation

NDA is for candidates after Class 12 while CDS is for graduates, but both share a similar written exam structure — Mathematics and General Ability Test (GAT) for NDA, and English, GK, and Elementary Mathematics for CDS.

Mathematics Weightage

Mathematics carries 300 out of 900 marks in NDA, making it one of the highest-weightage subjects. Algebra, Trigonometry, and Coordinate Geometry are consistently tested, so building strong fundamentals here has an outsized impact on your total score.

General Knowledge Component

The GAT/GK section blends English, Physics, Chemistry, General Science, History, Geography and Current Affairs. Because the breadth is wide, focus on NCERT-level concepts rather than going too deep into any single subject.

Physical Standards Cannot Be an Afterthought

Height, weight, chest measurement and medical fitness standards vary slightly by service (Army, Navy, Air Force) and are strictly enforced during the SSB and medical examination stages. Checking the exact physical criteria for your target service early avoids disqualification surprises later.

SSB Interview Preparation Starts Early

Unlike most govt exams, clearing the written test is only half the process — the SSB interview tests personality, group tasks and psychological aptitude over several days. Aspirants who start reading about SSB stages early adapt far more comfortably when the actual interview call comes.

Building a Combined Study Plan

Since both exams share overlapping Maths and GK syllabi, preparing for NDA/CDS together — rather than choosing one exclusively — widens your opportunities without significantly increasing preparation load.
